Spring is a time of organizing, cleaning and planting! It’s also a time when many people are trying to be more eco-friendly. Whether you have indoor or outdoor projects (or both!), here are several suggestions for keeping it green this spring:
Clean with purpose. It’s tempting to tear through your home like there’s no tomorrow, tossing unused objects and piling up trash bags on the curb. But wait! Sort through items such as clothing and toys and donate those that could be used by someone else. If clothing is too worn or stained to donate, turn them into cleaning cloths.
Recycle if possible. Empty cans, plastic containers and bottles and paper goods can often be reused and/or recycled. If you don’t have curbside recycling, find out what your local recycling center can process. Many supermarkets collect plastic shopping bags for recycling, which makes it easy to stop throwing those in the trash.
Try some natural cleaners. Instead of stocking up on cleaning products with toxic ingredients for a springtime cleaning blitz, try some natural cleaners. You can make your own cleaning solutions. There also is a wide selection of ready-to-use cleaning solutions available. Here are some awesome natural cleaning products you can find in your local store and use in your home.
Invest in some plants that help clean your indoor air. Did you know some types of inexpensive houseplants are terrific at cleaning the air inside your home? Check out this list of plants that serve as indoor air scrubbers. Have children and/or pets? Some plants are toxic when ingested, so get to know the plants you bring into your home.
Watch your water use. If you enjoy gardening, try hanging a calendar in your garage or shed to help schedule your water use. It’s easy to waste water outdoors. Make sure you’re not overwatering your lawn and plants. A local nursery and your water company are great sources for watering guides and other water-saving tips.
